Wood Sash Windows

Why Wood Sash window?

A wood sash window is a traditional vertically sliding window composed of one or more framed sashes, or panels, that move up and down within the window frameThese windows use weights or springs for counterbalance, allowing for easy operation and position retention. Key features include their classic aesthetic with small panes of glass separated by wooden glazing bars, a feature particularly common in older homes.

How they work

Sliding Mechanism:

The framed glass panels, called sashes, slide vertically within grooves in the window frame.

Counterbalance:

Sashes are typically counterbalanced by weights hidden within the window frame, connected by cords or tape. This system keeps the sash in place once you open or close it to your desired position.

Types of Operation:
While most commonly double-hung (both top and bottom sashes move), single-hung (only the bottom sash moves) and even triple or quadruple-hung versions exist.

Key Features

Traditional Aesthetics:
Wood sash windows are known for their elegant, classic appearance, especially in period homes.

Glazing Bars:
The sashes often feature a grid pattern of smaller glass panes, separated by delicate wooden dividing bars, which creates a charming, historic look.

Vertical Ventilation:
They offer excellent ventilation, as the sashes can be opened from the top or bottom to allow air to flow in or out.

Compact Design:
The sliding mechanism means they do not swing open, making them ideal for use in spaces where an outward swing might interfere with pathways or roads.
